ASOLF Adam, son of Peter Asolf or Fitz Asolf in 1160 gave Cottingelaia to
Henry WALES and his heirs, with all appurtenances, in plain, in wood,
in meadows and feedings, and in waters. The original deed, in Latin, with the seal of Henry Wales (Waleys, Wallis)
is the oldest document held in the archives at Canal Road,
Bradford.

BRIGGS Arthur Harry -born 1863 died 1920 - purchased Cottingley Woods from Wm. Ferrand. Built Cottingley Hall
and Cottingley Manor. He lived in Cottingley Manor and his son Arthur Edward was given Cottingley Hall.
BUSFEILD William - changed his name to Ferrand in 1839 (in 1837 his mother Mrs Sarah Busfeild
had resumed the name of Ferrand on succeeding to the family estates).
BUTTERFIELD Thomas - blacksmith died 1600 passed his gear and tools to another
blacksmith.

EATON Ellen Margaret, City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council. OBE awarded in 2003 for services to Local Government and to the community in
Bradford. Elected to Bradford Council in 1986 where she has served the Bingley (Rural) ward ever
since. Leader of the Conservative group 1995 to 2006 and leader of Bradford Council
from May 2000 to May 2006.
FERRAND Benjamin of St Ives, Lord of Manors of Cottingey & Oakworth, JP and DL,
baptised 1730 died unmarried October 1803 aged 73.
FERRAND Edward born 1778. In 1809 could describe himself as Lord of the Manors of Cottingley,
Oakworth, Allerton cum Wilsden and Crossley after acquiring the former property of
the Knights of St.John. He died 21st March 1837.
FERRAND Sarah - Cottingley House - relict of J. Ferrand Esq of Barnard Castle died 3rd May 1826 aged 74. She is buried in the Abbey Church of Bath.

to improve the condition of child labour. Died 1889
FIRTH Jack born 27th June 1917 died 7th September 1981 Played 1st Class Cricket between
1949 and 1958 for Yorkshire & Leicestershire as Wicket Keeper - Right Hand Bat. Made 3588 runs in
his career.

FRANKE Anthony - Son of William
FRANKE Stephen - brother of Anthony, together with Thos. BROOKE - yeoman of
Netherwoodhouse, William MORVELL of Cottingley and John RAWSON - husbandman of
Ingrow became owners of the manor in 1590 for the sum of £1040. The manor consisted
of 12 messuages, four cottages and two watermills, twelve gardens, 400 acres of wood
and 500 acres of moorland. These four allotted themselves portions and sold other
lots to tenants. In 1591 Stephen FRANKE bought from his co-partners the mansion
house - Cottingley Hall - which was his family residence until about 1600. In 1620
Stephen died leaving his son impoverished and in debt.
FRANKE William - Son of Anthony. In 1566 Father and son conveyed the
manor and capital together with all messuages, houses, cottages, barns,
garthings, tofts, crofts, perquisites and profits of courts etc. of
Cottingley to Bryan BAYLES, merchant of Potternewton for £180. Grandfather
William Franke conveyed the interest he had for the term of his life to BAYLES
in 1572 for a payment of £9.9s.4d a year for life - certain interests of William
the father of Anthony being excepted.

GASCOIGNE William - all manor of Cottingley granted by Sir John &
Elizabeth Depeden to William and his brothers Nicholas and Richard ,
John AMYAS and Robert GALLESHTORPE in 1397. Sir William Gascoigne was made
Chief Justice of the Kings Bench by King Henry IV in 1400. He died in 1414 -
he and his wife lie in Harewood Church. See Gascoigne coat of arms
GASCOIGNE Sir William - Great Grandson of William granted manor to William
FRANKE in 1503. (Father of Judge GASCOIGNE married daughter of Nicholas FRANKE

GRIFFITHS Frances - Together with Elsie Wright took photographs of the Cottingley Fairies.

HILL Elsie Wright - born 1901 died April 1988. Fooled Conan Doyle and the world with her
fairy photographs. An extremely gifted and accomplished artist who painted landscapes and portraits,
mainly in watercolour.

LAYCOCK Burdettwas born on 25 October 1861 at Heaton near Bradford.
Educated at Allerton, Wilsden and Cottingley, he began work as a 10-year-old half-timer at
Thomas Baines's Cottingley mill and spent several years learning the woollen trade with his
grandfather Joshua Laycock in Bradford.

THORNTON James - 1539 was milner at the fulling mill at Beckfoot - Thornton's
were in laws of Morvells.
THORNTON Richard - born 1838 the 11th of 12 children of Richard and Eliza
Thornton who had leased Cottingley Hall from the Ferrands since 1835. Richard
studied at Bingley Grammar School and the Royal School of Mines in London. In
1857 he accompanied Dr. Livingstone on the Zambesi expedition. Using family
money from Cottingley, he left Livingstone and with 2 natives and 300 slaves set
out to explore the country round Tete, north of Zambesi and fell in with a German
expedition in the fist ever European survey of the Kilimanjaro mountains. He died
of dysentery in 1863 at the age of 25.
THORNTON William - Clothier of Cottingley. His son William born at Beckfoot, trained at
Bingley school under Mr. Watkins, admitted sizar at St. John's June 21 1651 aged 17.
TIDSWELL Jean - (nee Balmforth)
World drag racing champion (1983). Born 1948. Married Steve Tidswell. Jean from Cottingley,
had a passion for cars since driving her dad’s milk float as a child. She began drag racing
when her husband converted a Ford Popular in 1978 and they joined Pennine drag Racing Club.
Five years later she became world drag racing champion in a race where all the other competitors
were men. In 1984 she held the 9.3 second strip record at the New York raceway near York.
The cars were a regular sight for villagers as they travelled up and down Manor Road.
Jean and Steve now live in Scotland.

WALLIS Richard - grandson of Henry inherited in 1248. Sir Richard was created Lord

WHITAKER Samuel -born 1869 died 1948. Last Landlord of the Old Sun Inn. Married to Sarah (b.1860
d.1941) who worked as a ladies maid at Cottingley Hall for Sir William and Lady Priestley.
WHYTE-WATSON George - Surgeon 1908-1974 - pioneered the treatment of chemotherapy at BRI in 1950's.
He lived for a period in the Grange at Cottingley.

in 18th century. attended Harrow School and Oxford University taking a Law Degree in
Geneva, Switzerland in 1786. Married at Geneva in 1788 Eleonore Madeleine Bertrand (of Swiss nationality),
daughter of M. Louis Bertrand, a Professor at Geneva University. William was a British
Secret Service master spy during the French Revolution. Assisted thousands of fleeing
french aristocrats -
Cottingley's Scarlet Pimpernel. Under Secretary of State for Home Affairs in late 1700's and later Chief Secretary of
Ireland after the 1798 Rebellion. Retired in 1807. Died 1840.
WICKHAM Henry Louis - son of William, born at Cottingley 19th May 1789. Receiver General
at Gibraltar. Died at Binstead October 1864
WRIGHT Arthur (1865-1926) - Father of Elsie Wright, uncle of Frances Griffiths. Worked in the Bradford
mills in the 1870's and worked at a variety of trades before working for the millionaire Mr. Briggs
at his Cottingley mansion. There it was his job to maintain Mr. Briggs 5 motor cars.
