Cottingley Manor

Cottingley Manor was built as a residence just before the First World War by a Bradford Worsted Manufacturer - Arthur Harry Briggs (born 1863 died 1920).

I am indebted to the late Tommy Finnegan for the following information

From 1948 until 1995 the building housed Cottingley Manor School

On 31st August 1948 Cottingley Manor opened its doors as a school and it was shortly after the school opened that masses began to be said in the school. These masses were serviced from the Sacred Heart Church in Bingley.

In the early days of the school's opening, Mass was said in the Hall and around the staircase area, but as the school grew in size, Mass was said in one of the larger classrooms.

For a long period the Manor and its grounds were a boon to the Sacred Heart Church as it provided an ideal setting for garden parties, fund raising and other social gatherings.

On 6th September 1963 the new school hall and Chapel were opened. The Manor continued to be used for Mass and in September 1970 the Parish of St. Mary & St. Monica was formed. Father Grogan was its first Parish Priest.

The Silver Jubilee of the Church coincided with the closure and sale of Cottingley Manor and the reorganisation of the Catholic Schools in the Bradford area.

In the short life of the Parish there have been five priests in residence:- Father Grogan, Father Finan, Father Johnson, Father Sullivan and the present Parish Priest Father Fenton.

The Cottingley Manor Health Club was opened in 1998.
