SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION IN COTTINGLEY

Education in Cottingley began in about 1816. The children of the village were taught to read and write on Sundays in a small chamber, but this proving inconvenient, in summer a barn was taken for the purpose, and in the winter the parlour of Mrs. Stanley. After some time, however, a blacksmith's shop was procured. It was also used for divine worship by different sections, and for a day school when the village could support a master.

In 1865 the school continued in the newly built Cottingley Town Hall until the purpose built Nursery and Junior School on School Street was built in 1933 by Local Government.

Cottingley Village Primary School, records 1883-1980, comprising of log books 1883-1980 and centenary souvenir brochure 1915 are sited at West Yorkshire Archive Service Ref No. 66D99

This school was demolished in 2002 following the move to Cottingley Moor Road.
